There are trips built around packed itineraries, and then there are the ones that ask almost nothing of you except to arrive. Over Labor Day weekend, my close friend Melissa and I slipped away for one night at Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, an oceanfront retreat on Florida’s Treasure Coast where the pace softened almost as soon as we stepped inside. It was only a short girls’ escape, but it felt wonderfully complete: time near the water, unhurried conversation, a beautiful room, thoughtful service and the kind of small luxuries that make one night feel like much more.
The resort occupies a particularly serene stretch of Ocean Drive, with the Atlantic creating both the view and the mood. Palm trees frame the property, the beach sits just beyond the pool deck and the sound of the water seems to follow guests from one inviting space to the next. Kimpton’s boutique personality is present, yet the hotel never feels overly styled or formal. Instead, it offers an easy coastal elegance—polished enough to feel special, relaxed enough to let your shoulders drop.
That sense of ease continued in our room. Melissa and I immediately noticed how spacious it felt, giving us plenty of room to settle in without navigating around luggage or each other. The property’s accommodations pair a tropical West Indies influence with dark wood, calming neutral tones, plush bedding and luxe bathrooms. Most rooms also have private balconies, and ours became part of the experience rather than simply an architectural extra. Stepping outside for the fresh air and taking in the resort atmosphere gave us a quiet pause between everything else we wanted to enjoy.
For guests planning more than a one-night stay, the variety is especially appealing. In addition to guestrooms, the resort offers studio and one-, two- and three-bedroom suites. Select suites include kitchens, separate living and dining areas or sleeper sofas. That flexibility makes the property equally suited to a romantic weekend, a multigenerational family trip or, as Melissa and I happily discovered, a much-needed getaway with a close friend. Service can determine whether a hotel is merely lovely or truly memorable, and throughout our visit, the staff brought warmth to the experience. The interactions felt gracious and attentive without being intrusive. That matters on a quick escape, when there is no time to recover from a complicated arrival or impersonal experience. Here, we could simply enjoy being together.
One of our favorite touches was Kimpton’s complimentary social hour, held daily from 4 to 5 p.m. It is such a simple amenity, yet it created a natural transition from the afternoon into the evening. We could pause, enjoy happy hour and toast to friendship without needing to plan another stop. For a girls’ weekend, it felt celebratory and wonderfully effortless and it proved that hospitality often lives in the details guests did not realize they needed.
The resort is designed to make staying on property tempting. Its heated oceanside pool overlooks the Atlantic and is surrounded by a landscaped deck with chaise lounges, tables and shaded umbrellas. The beach is only steps away, while the 24-hour fitness center offers cardio equipment, free weights and yoga mats for anyone who wants movement between moments of indulgence. Guests can also inquire about beach activities and seasonal hotel happenings, including live music and special gatherings.
Dining keeps the ocean in view. Cobalt, the resort’s signature restaurant, offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and cocktails in a casually elegant dining room, lounge and open-air oceanside patio. Its menus emphasize fresh local seafood, while poolside Heaton’s adds contemporary cocktails and a more relaxed setting. Depending on the season, live beachfront music and the resort’s oceanfront fire pits can stretch an evening into something cinematic: the breeze, the glow of the fire and the water all sharing the same frame. Private dining is also available in indoor and oceanfront settings for celebrations and intimate gatherings.
For guests who want to lean even further into restoration, White Orchid Spa is located at the resort and is open daily. The full-service spa offers massages and facials alongside medical-grade aesthetic treatments. Its menu includes deep-tissue massage, seasonal facials and more elaborate experiences, making it possible to build a full wellness day without leaving the property. Advance reservations are wise, particularly on holiday weekends.
Although our visit centered on friendship and relaxation, families will find thoughtful reasons to stay, too. Spacious rooms can include microwaves and mini refrigerators, and some suites offer full kitchens. The hotel also provides family-focused programming, including seasonal sea turtle education, plus a resident-mermaid program with limited-availability courses and meet-and-greet experiences. Pet lovers are welcome as well: in true Kimpton fashion, the resort embraces four-legged guests and offers pet amenities.
What stayed with me most, however, was not a checklist. It was the feeling of having space, such as physical space in our room, emotional space in our conversations and the wide-open beauty of the ocean just beyond us. Melissa and I laughed, relaxed and allowed ourselves to enjoy an escape that did not need to be complicated to be meaningful. One night can disappear quickly.
At Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, ours seemed to expand. Maybe it was the balcony, the sea breeze, the kindness of the staff or that easy happy-hour toast. More likely, it was the combination of all of it: a coastal setting that understands luxury is not always about doing more. Sometimes, it is about being cared for, being present and having the right person beside you while the ocean reminds you to breathe.
