There are date days that involve a quiet lunch, perhaps a little shopping, and a relaxing afternoon. Then there are date days when Sebastian and I are racing through Gotham City, solving puzzles, cracking codes, laughing hysterically, and trying to prove that we have what it takes to join Batman’s newest team of heroes.
Honestly, I will choose Gotham every time.
Our latest adventure brought us to Escapology at Plantation Walk for Batman: The Dark Knight Challenge, an immersive, always-private escape room that gives players 60 minutes to complete their mission. As longtime comic book nerds, Seb and I were excited before we even walked through the door. Naturally, I wore my Harley Quinn and Joker shirt because, well, duh. They are my favorites, and if I was going to enter Gotham City, I was absolutely going to dress for the occasion.
The adventure places players inside Batman’s Gotham City Guardian training program. Our mission was to locate and stop a device planted by Batman before it released a simulated chemical leak across the city. That meant searching for hidden clues, deciphering codes, solving interconnected puzzles, and attempting to keep our cool while the countdown clock continued moving. Escapology lists the Batman adventure as a moderate-difficulty, 60-minute experience, but when you are inside Gotham with the clock ticking, it feels wonderfully intense.
Seb immediately became hilariously competitive. He was determined to solve everything, save Gotham, and perhaps receive a personal congratulatory phone call from Batman afterward. Watching him move from clue to clue with complete seriousness made me laugh almost as much as the game itself. At different moments, one of us would notice something the other had missed, and we quickly discovered that our different ways of thinking made us a surprisingly strong team.
There were plenty of playful disagreements, dramatic reactions, and moments when we stared at an object as if it had personally offended us. Yet we kept communicating, experimenting, and cheering each other on. That is part of what makes an escape room so much fun: you are not simply watching an adventure unfold. You are inside the story, and every observation could become the clue that moves the mission forward. And guess what? We escaped with about seven minutes left!
Yes, Seb and I saved Gotham City with time to spare. I am still proud of us, although I am certain Seb would like it officially recorded that his competitive spirit played a major role in our victory.
The Escapology team made the entire experience even more memorable. Everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming, and enthusiastic, creating an atmosphere that felt exciting without ever becoming intimidating. Game Masters monitor each team from Mission Control and can offer hints or gentle nudges when needed, making the experience approachable for both experienced escape-room fans and complete beginners. Each game is private, so you only play alongside the people in your own group—no unexpected strangers joining your superhero team. Escapology recommends allowing approximately 90 minutes for the complete visit, including check-in, the game, a debrief, and a complimentary group photo.
Of course, the photos were part of the fun. My favorite may be the hilariously appropriate picture of me posing behind bars, exactly where a Joker-loving Harley Quinn fan probably belonged. Let’s be honest: I looked far too happy to have been captured.
The location makes the experience even better. Escapology sits in the heart of Plantation Walk, one of those South Florida destinations where you can easily turn one activity into an entire afternoon or evening. The open-air setting feels lively and inviting, with dining, entertainment, and plenty of places to continue celebrating after saving the city. Guests can walk over to nearby spots such as Tacocraft Taqueria & Tequila Bar for tacos, cocktails, happy hour, Taco Tuesday, or weekend brunch, because crime-fighting clearly works up an appetite. Plantation Walk brings everything together in a setting that feels relaxed, energetic, and made for spending time with someone you love.
What I enjoyed most was simply laughing with Seb. We have been together for many years, but experiences like this remind me that date days can still surprise us. They can be silly, competitive, wonderfully nerdy, and filled with the kind of moments that become inside jokes before the day is even over.
We entered Escapology as two comic book fans wearing our fandom proudly. We left as certified Gotham City heroes, with seven minutes remaining, photographic evidence of my brief incarceration, and a new memory we will be laughing about for a very long time.
